| Name: Renly Baratheon Character Series: A Song of Ice and Fire Age: ~21 |
| → PERSONALITY |
"And Renly, that one, he’s copper, bright and shiny, pretty to look at but not worth all that much at the end of the day." Renly is a friendly, charismatic man -- he "speaks amiably to highborn lords and lowly serving wenches alike" -- and it is these qualities that enabled him to gather such a large army and such huge support in his bid for the crown. He is by nature an easy-going, easily amused, cheerful man. He enjoys sport and often answers remarks -- often ones that make his sworn men bristle in defense -- with a smile or laugh. He is clever, makes witty comebacks, cracks jokes easily, and is not afraid to laugh at his own expense. Yet, Renly is definitely not without flaws. He can be slightly immature, possibly due to his young age; Barristan Selmy calls him a "prancing jackanapes" due to his youth, though Renly only responds with a laugh, and Catelyn Stark looks upon his host sadly, thinking that they are the "knights of summer" who only know peace and have never truly seen war. Sometimes his amusement gets carried away, as seen as when he had to leave the room after laughing at the possibility that a "nine-year-old girl the size of a wet rat" could have disarmed the prince. He is also not without ambition and conceit -- he has the nerve and confidence to crown himself king as the younger brother, because he knows that he is more likable and more powerful than his older brother Stannis, even going so far as to tell Stannis that no one wants Stannis for their king. He tells Catelyn that he will be a good king and lists off all his good qualities -- "strong yet generous, clever, just, diligent, loyal to my friends and terrible to my enemies, yet capable of forgiveness" and then says that he must be allowed "some flaws" when she suggests "humble". It's gotten to his head a little, and he's definitely proud, treating everything with a casual, yet dramatic, joking air, even serious political discussions, because he thinks he's just that cool. Though he can be serious at times, it is a rare occurence after he crowns himself king. He seems to take things more seriously prior to that, but the pride is still there, shown when he leaves court with his entire company after Eddard Stark refuses to support him in his plan. Renly is a handsome man as well, and he knows it -- there is more than just a touch of vanity there. He enjoys finery such as tourneys and rich feasts; he has a lavish, comfortable pavilion to stay in for when his host is on the move, and a point is made especially of how well he dresses, going into considerable detail on his fine wardrobe. |
